Tracks

Tailored tracks composed of standard modules

Multi-use of existing traffic space

  • Existing traffic space can be used to provide efficient bike highway routes. Especially well suited are:

    • Tram lines – urb-x can be constructed above them

    • Alongside highways and main roads

    • Next to train tracks

    • On embankments

    • Above small channels or any utility tubes

  • In many situations urb-x tracks offer additional noise reduction for the neighborhood

  • Neighborhoods welcome wood as a building material

  • Using existing traffic space simplifies planning, construction & maintenance

Junctions

  • Roundabouts are the recommended way of implementing junctions. The urb-x system architecture fosters a smooth flow of bicycle traffic.

  • A standard small roundabout with a diameter of 10 metres is recommended to be used to join 3 tracks or to attach exit or entry lanes.

  • Larger roundabouts can be created by using standard curve elements with a radius of 10m , 12m or larger.

  • Track entries/exits can be realized with standard elements. To keep the gradient of the entries/exits below the recommended 6% it is recommended to use the existing topography. Using a helix as a ramp saves space.

Small roundabout

Large roundabout

  • Entries and exits are designed individually and adapted to the local situation and topography.

  • Special modules facilitate the design of exits & entries.

Ramps

Überbrückungen

  • Standard span between two pillars is 20 meters. Wider spans using standard modules are possible, require tailored support structure.

  • Standard support modules could also be used for wider spans than 20 meters.

  • For spans larger than 60 meters a tailored support structure is required.

urb-x +

  • In tropical or hot climate urb-x track could be covered with a shade roof of indigenous plants

  • A green roof can also be used to cross ecologically sensitive areas and organically embed urb-x routes into such landscapes

  • In climatically humid areas, it may be advisable to cover all or part of the urb-x route in order to offer commuters predictable year-round trafficability.

  • In particularly confined areas, the realisation of ascents and descents by lift is an option

Conceptual Examples

Planing

  • The initial conception of urb-x routes is done by means of an easy-to-use web tool. Route designs created in this way can be refined iteratively.

  • 3D representations of a route designed with the web tool can be created at the touch of a button

  • An integrated traffic simulation can present a visualisation of the traffic flows and check a specific operational situation in advance

  • The route design serves as the basis for the detailed planning in CAD or BIM (building information system) format.
